Brussells Home Page

Todays tour started with a visit to Ghent. This is a town about half way between Brussells and Bruge, where we were going to next. Bruge has been described as the 'Little Venice' as it is truely a remarkable city with cobble stone streets, horse drawn carriages and the old worldly charm. We took over 120 photo's here and most do not do justice to the city.

Magnificant carvings on
a building in Ghent.

The clock tower and spire is
again a mjor feature in town.

The green huts are part of the
Christmas markets that are so popular.

Modern trams link
the old and the new.

Gai & I in Ghent. Still dry
and warm currently.

Statues and fountains are
features in most cities.

This old castle wall is
all that remains - no interior.

Canals were very important for
trade between these cities.

Bruge - access is across one
of the many bridges.

Our male guide on the right was
dressed for the weather.

Another canal - it's as if time
stands still here.

One of the many streets. Who is that
Aussie guy on the right ?.

Spray jackets on and also a bought
umbrella are now part of the package.

Several church spires dominate
the landscape.

Another building combining
old and new.

The canals are so peaceful.
No fast power boats here.

The umbrella came into good use
as the weather turned on us all.

This is down the canal
where Gai was standing.

One of many ornate
covered walkways.

The main square, again
with beautiful buildings.

Shops and houses were
already lit up for Christmas.

In the centre is the entrance
to the Basicilla.

The different buildings from the
different periods combine.

The ice skating rink in the
middle of the Chritmas markets.
The lights and markets
as Gai looks on.

We're too early for skating that
day, but hopefully later.

The 'taxis' are all lined up
waiting for you if desired.

The alter in the Basicilla as
mentioned earlier.

A close up of the Nativity Scene,
simple but effective. Live sheep.

More canals with
graceful swans on them.

Some artwork to
ponder over.

Besides chocolates, lace
& tapestries are popular.

The horse and carriage
close up.

Shared court yard. Notice
the old water pump.

Modern art symbolises
Bruge and it's culture.

The Virgin Mary adorns
many street corners.

Smallest pub in Belgium.
Did we have a drink or not ?.
