Tuesday 29th December

Meant to be 23 today and 17 overnight.

They have a radio station here on Norfolk at 89.9FM. It has a good mix of music, poetry, talk back and occasionally links into New Zealand Radio too. They have been issuing warnings of storms and flash flooding for Wednesday.

We were out the back plane spotting again and it landed as normal. It takes about 70 minutes to turn it around for take off again and we were positioned ready for the photographic session. Suddenly we heard the whining of the engines and there she was. Taking off in the opposite direction and Gai finally managed to get some good pictures of it. No more flights now until Thursday.

Clive has found some dirt roads that we never went on last time in 2009 so he's heading to the south west corner of the island today.

The first stop was at Crystal Pool look out. We went there last time as you park the car and then walk through a gate to a seat. Beautiful views out over the ocean. To the left is the first dirt road. This leads to Point Ross Reserve.

Well the drive down the hill requires use of first gear and brakes also. The road is very corrugated and the track is well worn. A sign up top of the track warns of 'Slippery when wet'. Yep - you'd be sliding all the way to the bottom of this one in wet weather. Down the bottom are three other warning signs pointing out the dangers of swimming, walking and the need for extreme caution. Well worth the view when you get down there though. Looking past the cliff edge you can just see Emily Bay in the distance. And it was 1st gear all the way back up again too.

Next it was on to Bumbora Reserve. This track wasn't as bad as the previous one although it was a bit longer. Again suitable for dry weather only. There is a nice green area here with picnic tables and toilets. There were about 4 cars when he got there but no people about.

Noticed a sign with 'This way to the beach'. So along a gravel track that then becomes a board walk. This crosses over a stream and about then down steps to gain access to the beach. This 'beach' seems to made of very small broken shells giving it a gravelly like feel. This area is called Cresswell Bay and proved to be popular with the surfers. This is where all the people were. Again it was low tide and there were little rock pools with fish in them. The water was cold so now I know why they were wearing wet suits.

Well the car is a little dusty now so hopefully we will get the rain that they are forecasting.

On the way back to Tau Gardens we pass the N.I. Museun of Transport and Technology so Clive took some pictures of the equipment that is in the yard outside.

He then drove to Headstone Reserve - so named after two fishermen were drowned off the rocks below and their bodies never recovered. This area also overlooks the local tip. It appears that they burn most rubbish except bottles and cans. The walk up to the Monument is quite steep and then you can continue up the hill until you reach the grassy reserve at the very top. This can be accessed by car at the top of the road if you want.

The Chinese shop is open again so it's Chinese for tea. Lemon chicken for me whilst Clive has a Chicken Curry and rice. This Chinese shop does not make a good curry.

Weather is a bit cooler - about 21. The wind has dropped off for the first night since we have been here. Storm tomorrow ? Near midnight it starts to rain.

Cloudy today, but we
should still get the plane.
